Temples in Battambang

Battambang is home to numerous wats (temples) which make interesting places to visit. Many of the temples in Cambodia were destroyed throughout the Khmer Rouge period but those in Battambang fared only a little better because of the relatively benign local leadership. Wat Tahm Rai saw (White elephant temple) is one of the very most visited due to the elaborate structure but also worth a visit are Wat Gahndahl and Wat Samrong Knong the latter home to a particularly emotive memorial to the victims of the Khmer Rouge. Visitors are welcome at all temples but should dress appropriately and remove shoes when entering the sanctuary. You will discover that many monks will approach you while they like to practice their English - it can be quite a fun means of whiling away a couple of hours. The temple grounds will often have several food stalls so refreshment is never very far away.
